But what's with the weather? I know that no one else that doesn't live here has any clue what our weather's been like. First, we had the coldest, worst winter in my 37 year memory. We have a system with winter that works for us - it gets cold, it snows, it stays for a week or two then we get a Chinook for a week or two, the snow's melted and its somewhat bearable until the next cold front. This last winter, that cycle failed to occur. We had snow, a lot of snow, on the ground from Dec 1 right till pretty much March or April. It finally melted for May but it hasn't been warm enough to be considered spring like except for a few days here and there. So now June. May was alright, we could see the light at the end of winters tunnel so what happened? June 5th and it snows pretty much right across southern Alberta. There are still snow warnings. Did someone forget to tell mother nature we're heading into summer? Apparently so.
I've been predicting snow in July this year and after this weekend I'm even more sure it will happen. Hopefully I'm wrong, its never fun to go the Stampede in a snow storm.
Which brings me to my point. We've all been beat over the head with the Global Warming stick enough in the last few years. We all know we're heading to hell on earth in a hand basket if we don't somehow reverse our pollution and start living like cavemen again, or something. But what if that's not true. What if it has nothing to do with us? I've always been a believer - in mostly everything. I especially love conspiracy theories and fringe explanations. I've always felt like our current global weather situation to be more easily explained by Polar/Climate shift than the nasty effects of green house gases. Every year, it seems winter hangs on just that little bit longer and fall lasts longer. Last year, it was really nice right up to December. Our winter stretched past when spring should have started and now spring is pushing into summer. Perhaps summer will last right past fall and fall into winter and you get the picture. A global seasonal shift won't be easy or pretty or fun to deal with but think of the possibilities. One day in the not so far future we could be sipping beer on the lawn after Christmas dinner and wearing our parkas to the rodeo in the summer. Could be fun.
